SMART CARDS
All staff, students and visitors will be provided with smart cards. These
will act as identity cards for those on the college site and will need to be
visible at all times. Students losing their cards or leaving their cards at home
will be issued with temporary cards and charged for replacements if necessary.
ACCESS TO THE COLLEGE
Students will enter College under the linking bridge. To the left of the
entrance will be the student reception (often called the “Porter’s Lodge”),
due mid-November. Initially the temporary student reception will be small
but this will be expanded during the next stage of development. Students and
staff will enter and leave the college site through turnstiles that register
attendance. Staff and students will use smart cards to operate the turnstiles.
ACCESS TO FOOD
Smart cards will also provide the basis of the payment system for food and
snacks at the canteens. This is designed to ensure that parents are assured that
students take food as expected. Parents and tutors will be able to receive a
report on the students’ eating habits. Money can be charged to the cards
at specified locations.
CLASSROOMS
All rooms are provided with a telephone.
HEATING
The heating is computer-controlled using independent classroom thermostats.
VENTILATION
All classrooms have forced ventilation. This operates automatically when the
room is occupied. The bottom windows are locked. The top windows can be
opened. In normal weather conditions there should be no need to open the
windows.
In addition, some rooms have additional cooling systems that are operated
from within the individual classrooms.
LIGHTING
All classrooms have automatic lighting. Once the lighting is switched on the
lighting will stay on while there is movement in the room. When the room
is vacated the lighting will switch off after a fixed period. The lighting has
been arranged so that the units adjacent to the whiteboard can be switched off
to limit the glare from the whiteboard surface.
ACOUSTICS
The rooms have been designed to provide good acoustics for teaching. This
acoustic performance is best when the teacher stands close to the whiteboard
wall of the room with the tables arranged as provided.
