Theatre Guild to Lose Home - and one of Its Stars

THE Northampton Theatre Guild will lose one of its best stars when, 23 year-old Judi Betts leaves to get Married on 3 April.

Her departure from the Guild comes at a time when they are already in "dire straits", according to Judi's mother, Mrs, Joan Betts, the producer of the Guild's recent presentation, "Boeing Boeing".

Northampton's new Expressway is planned to go straight through the Playhouse in Clare Street where the Guild have happily been entertaining packed houses on almost every performance in the past years.

Now they are faced with having to find alternative accommodation: and hope that anything they might find will seat more than the 86 which they can now squeeze into the Playhouse - which incidentally was a warehouse before theatrical hands got to work.

Disband?

So far no suitable building has come to light, and the Guild are worried that unless something comes up before the demolition order is put into effect, they-will have to disband.

Judi has been a member of the Guild since she was sixteen, and her first major role was that of Jo in "A Taste of Honey."

Since then she has been in many of their productions - except when she was studying at Goldsmith's College, London - her last performance being the German air hostess in "Boeing Boeing".

Teacher

After her marriage in St Peter's Church, Weston Favell - a stone's throw from her parents' home at 43 St. Peter's Gardens -Judi and her husband, Adrian Baxter will live in Sandbach, Cheshire, where Adrian works as a chartered surveyor, and auctioneer.

Judi, at present teaching at Chiltern Junior School, Duston, is hoping to get a teaching job there, and also to join the local amateur dramatic society, of which Adrian is a member.
