Gunner Returns

Frank WrightJanet Facer (now Anderton), who was a pupil and then worked at the school from the 70's until the end, read Dave Littlewood's item The Legendary Gunner.  It reminded her of a tale that she had long forgotten.  Dave reports that Gunner never went back to the school after it went Comprehensive, as he did not want to see what had happened, however, Janet knows that he did pop in at least once.

I can vouch that he did come back to St Trins when it was a Comprehensive on at least one occasion. There used to be one Banda duplicating machine in the school office which was upgraded to a Gestetner (you used to have to obliterate your typing mistakes with some substance that resembled pink nail varnish) also in the school office. After that, as the need for duplicating work increased, there became a need for a Resources Department, and a room was found to house a larger duplicating machine (or two).  This room was the other side of the cloakroom and halfway down the stairs to the Science corridor if I remember correctly.  Miss Wilkinson said to me one morning "Come on, we're going to help with some printing" and she and I skedaddled over to this room and went in.  Lo and behold, who was there waiting for the printing but Gunner Wright.  I still got that awful feeling in my stomach and the heart palpitations just at the sight of him.  He couldn't even raise a smile on that occasion and he had long since retired, because he went at the end of 1968 and it was 1975 when this took place.  I don't remember seeing him ever again though.
