School Concerts
Some memories of Concerts from Glenn March
I was in the last batch of pupils in Northampton to take (and pass) the 11+
and so was at Trinity Grammar School from Sept 1969 - Jul 1974.
My first concert was when I was in the second year and we did 'Daniel Jazz'
and Faure Requiem, at the time I was still singing boy soprano.
I remember playing 2nd Clarinet in the orchestra for the 1973 production of
Ruddigore. At the time I was one of 2 pupils studying music (the other being
Wendy Shaw). David Baker gave me the choice of playing in the orchestra or
having a part in the show. I opted for the orchestra. On one night I remember
that the original trombone player could not do the performance and a deputy
player came along. Half way through the first half of the show we were sitting
waiting for our cue to start playing and I looked down to see David in full tail
suit crawling about the floor of the orchestra pit with a message to tell the
deputy trombone that the next number in the score was cut.
The last concert I did at Trinity included a performance of Donald Swann's
'Requiem for the Living'. We were privileged in the Donald Swann was
present for the performance. In the first half Kevin Gibson and Steve
Potter did a comedy sketch which included a line that one of the parents was ' A
shifter in the Royal Horse Artillery'. Need I say more than it didn't come out
as Royal Horse Artillery! The audience were in stitches and David Baker just
collapsed over the piano laughing. Obviously dear old 'Buzzer' Howard just
sat there straight faced on the front row!
Does anyone have any memories of the concert when we did Constant Lambert's
'Rio Grande' I know it was scored for 2 piano's and I remember sitting in the
choir in awe of David's playing.
