The Tower from Trinity Avenue

Trinity High School, Northampton

Some memories from the messages sent in by former pupils.

When the communications board was removed, there were some memories that people had include within the items posted.  Those memories have been moved to this page.

Andrew Ingram:

Hi, I attended Trinity from 1961 to 1966. It was my house in Kingsthorpe Grove that we bunked off to during cross country running!   Many familiar names including Sheila Irons, John Anderton and Martin Verity.

Pauline Reynolds (now Simmons):

I attended Trinity 1967-71, David Baker was also my music teacher, met him again possibly two years ago at Moulton Secondary, where he was playing the piano for the a Gilbert & Sullivan group; he was just as lovely.  I am in touch with several girls from 71-72 (I left 4th year) and have good memories of THS.  Mr Hill (French), Mr Joy (Geog), Miss Davies (Chem), Mr Hutchinson (Eng), Mrs Watson & Mrs Hogg.

John Atkinson:

I attended Trinity between 1967 to 1972, it prepared me for my first job at Brierlies!  RIP Frank B.  Trinity was not the best experience in my life.  The Cobblers are playing Man United this weekend, takes me back to 1970 when we last played them at the great County Ground, I bet many of those there that day were still at or had attended Trinity.  I've not lived in Northampton since 1980, but you will still find me around the town or up the Cobblers.  I often ask myself what Trinity did for me (I didn't do anything for Trinity), I guess the answer was that I learnt to 'wag it' at a high standard from school early on and learnt how to survive well in life from my experiences 'on the streets of downtown Northampton (the Crown & Cushion back room - long gone).  Good luck to all of the people I knew at Trinity.

Kevin Gibson:

Hi I started Trinity in 1966 and enjoyed being in the plays and Gilbert and Sullivan productions. I have remained good friends with Alan Hutchinson (English Teacher) who has been a headmaster in Preston for some considerable time.  He still keeps in touch with Tad Newton and family.  Alan's daughter Emma recently Qualified from Newcastle University as a Doctor of Clinical psychology and she now works in the psychology service which I head.  I think the introduction of such dangerous books as Saturday Night and Sunday morning might have influenced my choice of career.

Does anyone remember Buzzer banning the production of The Crucible because of sexualised content!! Nothing like censoring something to develop an inquiring mind.

Do any recordings of the Gilbert and Sullivan productions exist it would be wonderful to hear the rich baritone voice of Mr Grimshaw and Nobby Clarke's impression of Harry Secombe on a bad day. I seem to remember a wonderfully comedic trio they both sang in the Mikado I think.

Does anyone remember the name of the Maths teacher who played Katiya in the Mikado I had a crush on her at the time which soon went when she tried to teach me maths I was hopeless.

Any way less self-disclosure the real message is one of thanks to those Teachers who put in the effort so some of us could have a good time and enjoy a whole host of memories.  To anyone out there who was in Mikado , The Yeoman of the Guard , The Travails of Sancho Panza, Ruddigore and any number of the concerts produced by the delightful David Baker Hello.

Pamela Dunkley (Now Pamela Stevens)

I too enjoyed five fantastic years at Trinity, starting in 1966 and ending in 1971.  I saw the message on the board from Kevin Gibson and would remind him that I was Phoebe Merrill in the production of Yeoman of the Guard and have a photograph of him holding me in his arms.  You always were such a romantic Kevin.

I would like to say hi to David Baker too, he may not know it but he literally saved my life, so I have a lot to thank him for.  I saw him in Northampton about 2 years ago but was too timid to say hello.  I hope I get the chance soon.

David Bunker:

I think I may have an answer to the question posed by Kevin Gibson re the musical Maths Teacher.  If my memory serves me correctly she would be Gill Palmer, who left the school in 1971 (after getting me through Maths O Level) to teach at the Girls High School in Derngate.

I was at Trinity from 1966 to 1973 so we must have been in the same year Kevin, although not in the same form.  After leaving school I moved to Newcastle upon Tyne and then Preston before returning to the town in the late 1980's.

Sue Lane (Now Sue Hewitt)

I was at Trinity from 1968-1975.  I only have good memories of school.  I have fond memories of the Gilbert and Sullivan productions and especially remember Mr Spence and Mr Grimshaw being very professional on the stage.  I still live in Northampton and have kept in touch with a few of my class friends.  I remember Kevin Gibson.  We were in Ruddigore together.  I also trained as a nurse at Princess Marina hospital when he was also training to be a nurse.

Paul Stuart

I was at Trinity from 1966 to Easter 1972.  Mr "Tiger" Timms told a load of us to get our hair cut or don't come back.  So I didn't go back!

I've still got my copy of the 1968 panoramic photo, and regularly embarrass ex pupils I meet when I bump into them via my work etc.

Mr Joy (Geography Teacher) now works at Nationwide Moulton Park.

One of my memories is of bags and briefcases being thrown out of Room 14 (top of the Tower) and the burning of caps after finishing the second year.
