School Cruise to the Mediterranean in
1972
Tony Osborne says: I was at Trinity from 1969 to 1974 (when I wasn't
wagging it!!) and I'm surprised that there is no mention of the
"educational" school cruise I and others went on in 1972 (I was in
the 3rd year at the time)
I can't remember the exact order of places we visited but I remember
we got a coach from the school to Gatwick Airport (at an ungodly
hour of the morning!!) and flew to Venice where after a few hours
sightseeing we boarded the cruise ship and went to Athens, Rhodes,
Corfu, Istanbul and finally Naples.
I say it was an "educational" cruise but, although we were supposed
to make notes everywhere we went and produce a written report back
at school, it was a bunch of school kids, some of who had never been
abroad before, there was VERY little work done in that area!
As I remember, when it came time to hand in the reports, quite a few
of us were off "ill").
As I remember it, Venice was very interesting, all that beautiful
crystal, the pigeons in St. Marks Square etc.
Rhodes and Corfu were hot & sunny and I'm pretty sure it was one of
these where I and another lad, can't remember who, went into a shop
that had shelves full of miniature bottles of spirits to have a look
around. For whatever reason there was nobody working in there!
Needless to say we did what you would expect a group of schoolboys
abroad to do!! Well, it would have been rude not to, surely?
Athens was fascinating, looking around the Acropolis and The
Parthenon.
Istanbul was colourful, the bazaars where you haggle over prices
seemed like something from a different world!
But the best was Naples as we went to see the ruins of Pompeii. I
was absolutely fascinated by these buildings that were the best part
of 2000 yrs old. The bodies encased in lava that were in glass
cases. The only problem I guess was that at 14 yrs old you REALLY
don't appreciate these places as much as you would as an adult. I
spent years saying I'd love to go back and see the place again as an
adult and, finally, made it back there last year (had a day trip
down there during a holiday in Rome) and found it just as, if not
more, interesting than I did when I was 14.
