Rebuilt Victorian Organ Heard Again at Prize Giving

MUSIC from a magnificent Victorian church organ greeted parents when they arrived at Northampton's Trinity School for the prize winners evening.


The 90-year-old pipe organ from St. Peter's Church in Weston Favell was dismantled and re-assembled in the school hall by members of staff.


Mr. Colin Walker, from St. Peter's was the organist who entertained visitors before the prize giving.


The organ was brought bit by bit from the church in the school's minibus. Money for the move and the rebuilding came, from an anonymous donor.


Headmaster Mr. Derek Cummings, said 'staff photographed the whole dismantling and re-building process, and a picture of the organ was presented to the organist to take back to the church.


The picture will go near the new electronic organ at St. Peters.


Former Trinity pupil Mr. Trevor England presented the prizes.

He is the appeals organiser for the British Institute for Brain Injured Children.


Mr. England recalled the time, when, as a pupil at the school, he received detention for falling asleep during a prize giving.


Seven open prizes were awarded during the evening.


Elizabeth Browne and Susan Miller won physical education prizes The Baker Cup for Drama went to Nigel Warwick.

 

The PTA prizes for the greatest improvement in one Year was awarded to Mary Kovacs, Draginja Radomilovic, and Anthony Wright


Kay Charlton and Zena Clarke won the Charles Baker prize for music.


The Chown Cup for Music went to Maria Delves and the Chown Trophy for Craft was won by Andrew Gleave.


Andrew Keevil and David Williams won the "Auricula" Trophy.

A Two-manual Bevington pipe organ built in 1893 and until recently at St. Peter's Church, Weston Favell, is being rebuilt at Trinity School.  It was bought by a friend of the school.

 

At present it is being re-assembled in the school hall by teachers, Mr. Stephen Meakins (left) head of music, and Mr. Stanley Guffogg, head of the chemistry department.
