Fire at Trinity Janet Anderton
showed these pictures to Kevin Hewitson, who still works at the
school. He remembered it well. It was not a real fire.
Kevin said that the “fire” event was part of
Sixth Form Induction Week organised by him in 1997. There were
a whole series of events including the “abduction" of Mike Hart, the
then Headteacher, by the students – where the staff and students had
to try cough up money to ensure he was returned to school, and
no-one contributed in the hope that he would not be returned!
He was "held" in a local hotel for the day by the students, if I
remember correctly; there were other events where Steve Grose had
reputedly been “abducted by aliens" and a mock up of a road traffic
accident in the playground.
The “fire” in the Humanities Block
was not a real fire (but smoke created by (probably) a "smoke"
machine provided by the fire service and the fire brigade had made a
prior arrangement (with Kevin) to turn up to put the “fire” (which
they had previously created) out when the fire alarm went off. The
firemen “rescued” a dummy dressed in Trinity School uniform from the
Humanities block. The week was great fun for all concerned.
The potential Sixth Formers, who
did not know in advance that events were going to happen acted as
reporters and were judged according to the quality of their events
and stories. They had been issued with “cheque books” and resources
to buy stories.
The Chronicle & Echo and Radio
Northampton judged the events. |
